Image modes are used from sending a friendly picture to another station to the real serious of sending weather maps to boats out on the high seas. There are different methods of doing this but they all basically do the same thing. You might receive Images from NOAA on HF or Satellite images from the APT Satellites flying over head of weather images to the Amateur bands sending photos they took.
